Opportunity to Speak was set up by Peaks and Dales Advocacy as a small group to enable people of all ages to have a say in their community and talk about their lives and wishes for their future.
At the beginning they talked about themselves and their aspirations for the future, they learnt about advocacy and how they could speak up for themselves or find someone to help them to do that.
We have sessions on Self Advocacy, Confidence and self-esteem building, visiting speakers as well as talking as friends in a safe environment.
In the last year the group has made a film, “This is Us”, about their lives and future aspirations, the film was launched at Easter at the Buxton Film Festival and received good reviews. (Not easy for a group that did not have the knowledge or skills to make a film initially).
The group now want to make a workbook to accompany the film and show it in group homes and schools and colleges. After the workbook the group want to make a film about Bullying, something most of them have experienced and we are grateful to Buxton Lions for giving us some money for recording equipment.
We are looking for new members and if you know someone who would benefit from meeting with us on a Thursday afternoon at 1pm at the Buxton Football Club, The Tarmac Silverlands Stadium, Buxton, please contact Ann or Colin, email@example.com
